Amenity highlights: Guests can walk or take complimentary shuttles from the lobby up and down the hillside, stopping at the health spa before continuing to the restaurant and beach area. A three-section pool with a rock-grotto waterfall is surrounded by a towel hut, tour desk, and water-sport cabanas. An oversized spa tub is located on the pool's sundeck. The resort's 75-yard beach provides lounge chairs and shade trees.

Insider tip: The resort includes its own desalinization and wastewater treatment plants, with treated water stored in freshwater ponds that attract turtles, ducks, herons, egrets, and a colony of iguanas living in and around pond mangroves.

Dining options at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa run the gamut from a candlelit restaurant with dress code to a poolside bar where bare feet are in vogue. At night, music and dancing are offered in the lobby lounge.

The 10,000-square-foot Journeys Spa offers men's and women's saunas, steam rooms, and private sunning terraces furnished with cushioned lounge chairs. The spa's Signature Experience begins with a choice of salt glow or marine body polish, followed by a deluxe facial and a choice of four 50-minute massages.

Recreation options include a multi-section freeform pool, four lighted tennis courts, a basketball court, a fitness center, and daily activity programs. A children’s club provides supervised activities for kids age 4–12.

Driving directions from Cyril E. King/St. Thomas International Airport: After leaving the airport, turn right on Harwood Hwy, then turn left on Route 38 east and continue to Smith Bay Rd. The resort is on the left.

Getting there: Most guests take a taxi-van from the airport to Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa at a cost of $16–$25 for two persons. Rental cars are available online.

Getting around: Resort staff can arrange taxis for travel in the area; they recommend that guests only take taxis with dome lights and the letters TP on the license plates. Taxi fare to Charlotte Amalie costs $5–$15. Buses are also available for less than $5.

Shuttle vans or private cars of varying prices are available. They can be selected during the process of booking an air-inclusive reservation for this hotel, via this Web site, and added to the total trip cost.
