Information & Amenities

The Waldorf Astoria

Hotel Information: Host to generations of royalty, US presidents, heads of states, socialites, and celebrities, The Waldorf Astoria has been one of the world's most well-known hotels for more than a century. The main lobby's expanse of mahogany, marble, and crystal exemplifies the hotel's Art Deco grandeur.

Insider tip: The hotel's Peacock Alley restaurant/bar commemorates a 300-foot marble promenade linking the original 1893 Waldorf with a 1897 addition, The Astor, at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. With ladies in plumage, finely dressed notables such as the Astors, the Vanderbilts, and the Whitneys strolled between the two buildings, leading a society columnist to bestow the name. (The original hotels were razed in 1929 to make room for the Empire State Building, and a new hotel--at the time, the world's largest--was constructed at the present site.)
