Hotel Information: Two kilometers (one mile) from the lively town of Playa del Carmen, this resort offers both beachfront relaxation and a tropical retreat amid five acres of lush gardens and fountains. Although the resort provides daily activity and entertainment programs, it tends to attract those interested in a quieter ambience and a family-friendly environment.

In addition to a casual buffet restaurant, dining options include dinners in Japanese, Brazilian, gourmet, and steakhouse specialty restaurants. The resort’s theater hosts nightly entertainment. Overlooking the turquoise sea on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, the Riu Palace is set within the exclusive Playacar complex, one kilometer (0.5 mile) from the 18-hole Playacar Golf Course. Five acres of lush gardens with fountains contain two sparkling pools, one with a swim-up bar. Dining and drinks are provided beachside, poolside, in air-conditioned dining rooms, or on open-air terraces. Cuisine options include casual international buffets and specialty restaurants. Guests also receive lunch and beverage privileges at three partner resorts, a five-minute walk away. Water sports, daily activities, nightly entertainment, and a kids club for ages 4–12 provide a well-rounded recreational program. Guest suites at Riu Palace Mexico are housed in two low-rise wings of the resort complex. All suites at this Playacar hotel have either a furnished balcony or patio with views of the gardens and fountains; some suites have partial-ocean views and private spa tubs. Sitting areas are furnished with small sofas. Minibars and liquor dispensers are restocked every second day. Bathrooms have showers (may have tubs), bidets, hair dryers, and complimentary toiletries. Driving directions from Cancún International Airport:
- Take Hwy 307 south.
- Follow signs for Playacar, just south of Playa del Carmen.
- Riu Palace Mexico All Inclusive will be on the left, at Avenida Xaman-Ha, Manzana 3, Lote 4.
Getting there: Taxis from the airport to the resort cost approximately US$45. Rental cars are available online.
Getting around: Guests can stroll the four blocks to Mexican Street, designated for Riu resort guests, with a variety of shops and the Renova Spa. The resort’s three partner properties all are within a five-minute walk.
Taxi fare into Playa del Carmen and the ferry to Cozumel is approximately US$5-$10. Taxis can be hired for blocks of time or for the day, but fees should be negotiated and confirmed before departure. Rental cars provide the most flexibility when traveling to outlying areas, and can be booked online.

In addition to a white-sand beach, Riu Palace Mexico offers two lavish outdoor pools, one with a swim-up bar.
Land and water sports include including kayaking (canoeing), windsurfing, snorkeling, and tennis on two lighted hard-surface courts. A fitness center is equipped with a sauna, cardio equipment, and free weights. Complimentary privileges are provided at a larger fitness center at partner property Riu Yucatan.
Water aerobics are among the daily activities, and children 4–12 can join a kids club with supervised programs. The resort also has a children’s pool and playground..
Other popular recreational activities include fishing excursions, scuba diving, horse riding, and parasailing (surcharges for all). Designed by Robert Von Hagge, the 18-hole Playacar Golf Course is one kilometer (0.5 mile) from the resort (surcharge).
