Hotel Information: Winner of numerous prestigious awards, the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is located in the midst of the 23,000-acre Kapalua Resort on the quieter, western coast of Maui. Soft golden sands lead to the clear Pacific Ocean. Inland are lush rainforests, a protected marine-life conservation district, a native Hawaiian sacred site, and golf courses that double as wildlife sanctuaries. After a $160 million transformation (January 2008), the resort has achieved a new level of luxury.
Amenity highlights: Two championship golf courses adjoin the resort. The Plantation Course unfurls across island canyons, native vegetation, and panoramic oceanfront plateaus. At the Bay Course, the signature hole extends onto an ocean-framed black-lava peninsula.
The Ritz-Carlton's Waihua Spa offers treatments based on native Hawaiian healing and island plants. Most of the 15 treatment rooms open to private outdoor shower gardens. The resort also features a three-tiered outdoor pool with two spa tubs. The Banyan Tree, the resort's signature seafood restaurant, overlooks the Pacific Ocean and Moloka'i.
Insider tip: Dr. Stephen Leatherman (a.k.a "Dr. Beach") named D.T. Fleming Beach, which fronts the resort, America's Best Beach for 2006. A professor of environmental studies, Leatherman is recognized as one of the nation's foremost authorities on beach quality.
Property Amenities
The oceanfront Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua is 10 miles from historic Lahaina. The resort has completed a $160 million transformation project in January 2008, featuring new guestrooms, one- and two-bedroom residential suites, and redesigned restaurants.
Two championship golf courses adjoin the resort: one designed by Arnold Palmer, the other by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. Shuttles transport guests to the two golf courses, three secluded beaches, and a tennis complex.
Guests can partake in the resort's cultural programs, such as Sense of Place Tours, "talk story sessions," and Masters of Slack Key Guitar concerts.
Dining options include the award-winning Banyan Tree, the Kai sushi restaurant, and the oceanfront Beach House.
Wireless Internet access is available throughout the resort, which is also entirely nonsmoking.
Waihua, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua's new 17,500-square-foot spa (renovated June 2008), features 15 treatment rooms, including two outdoor couples’ cabanas; steam rooms, saunas, and spa tubs with lava stone walls; and relaxation areas with Basalt stone floors and rain showers. Most treatment rooms open to private outdoor shower gardens. The spa offers a wide range of Hawaii-inspired treatments, including Lomilomi massage. A full range of hair, manicure, pedicure, and waxing services are available at the salon.
The fitness center, open 24 hours a day, features views of the Pacific Ocean. A variety of classes are available, including yoga and Pilates.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua’s spacious guestrooms and suites, renovated January 2008, feature furnished lanais with ocean, partial-ocean, or garden views.
Elegant contemporary decor includes Hawaiian artwork, hardwood floors, and area rugs with authentic Hawaiian designs.
Bathrooms feature soaking tubs, separate showers, plush robes, makeup/shaving mirrors, and Bulgari bath products.

Getting there: The daily resort fee includes shuttle service to and from Kapalua West Maui Airport. Rental cars, available online, are also a good option. Taxis from Kapalua cost approximately $15.

- Follow H-380 to the first traffic light and bear left.
- Continue straight through the next few sets of lights, crossing Pu'unene Avenue.
- Continue to the junction of H-380 and H-30.
- Continue driving along the winding coastline toward Lahaina and through Ka'anapali, Napili, and then Kapalua (highway signs will indicate towns).
- A green road sign on the right side of the road will indicate "Office Road, The Village Course."
- Take this left-hand turn (there is no traffic light) onto Office Rd.
- Take the first right after the Honolua Store (entrance to the hotel) onto Ritz-Carlton Drive.
Getting there: From Kahului Airport, shared vans are approximately $70, and taxis are $80-$110. Rental cars are available online.
Getting around: Shuttle service within the Kapalua Resort is covered by the resort fee. Scheduled shuttle service (surcharge) is available to Lahaina and Kapalua. Rental cars are recommended for exploring Maui's many beaches and other attractions.

Activities
Kapalua Adventures offers guests a wide range of adventure tours (surcharges apply). Kapalua Adventure Center, located in the central area of the resort below the Kapalua Golf Academy, includes an outfitters shop with clothing and gear for adventure enthusiasts, a café with healthy fare and a premium selection of beer and wine, a coffee bar with specialty Hawaiian coffees, a multi-media entertainment and information center, and trained adventure concierges.
Located in the mountainous area above the resort is the Mountain Outpost, featuring one of the largest zipline systems in North America with eight dual-track ziplines. In addition, two suspension bridges, a ropes challenge course, and a four-station climbing tower are available. Guests are transported to the Outpost by biodiesel-fueled vehicles via existing pineapple roads. Access to the area is restricted to official Kapalua Adventures’ vehicles to ensure safety while minimizing environmental impact.
On site, a large sundeck surrounds a 10,000-square-foot, three-tiered outdoor pool with small waterfalls and two spa tubs. The Wahiua Spa houses an ocean-view fitness center with TV-equipped cardio machines, strength-training equipment, steam room, sauna, and classes such as Pilates and yoga.
The resort fronts the golden sands of D.T. Fleming Beach, which "Dr. Beach" named America's Best Beach for 2006. The Pacific waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling in summer, and surfing during winter swells. Two other sandy beaches, enclosed by volcanic rocks and cliffs, are within walking distance. Water-sports equipment can be rented at the resort.
A six-court tennis complex includes a basketball court and yoga studio.
The Ritz-Carlton is part of the Kapalua Resort, home to two championship 18-hole golf courses and the Kapalua Golf Academy. Shuttles are provided on request to golf courses, where guests enjoy discounted fees.
Sightseeing and whale-watching cruises, deep-sea fishing excursions, and additional water-sports rentals are available at Lahaina Harbor, 10 miles away.

Decor reflects Maui's undersea life, with fanciful blown-glass light fixtures inspired by sea urchins and vibrant corals. Seasonal menu focusing on fresh local ingredients. Sample menu items include Steamed Opakapaka, Roasted Butterfish with Kona Crab Gratin, and, for dessert, Warm Kapalua Pineapple Cobbler.
Kai - Sushi, sashimi, Japanese appetizers, sake. Sleek Asian-inspired decor with views of the pool, Pacific Ocean, and Moloka'i. Dinner nightly.
The Terrace - Indoor dining under high ceilings with views of pools and gardens. Covered outdoor dining, also. Architectural details reminiscent of Maui's historic plantations. Buffet breakfast. Regional Pacific cuisine for lunch and dinner.
The Beach House - Beachfront dining under a natural canopy of coconut palms. Salads and sandwiches for lunch, tropical cocktails and other drinks throughout the day. Open late morning until late afternoon.
The Pool Bar & Café - Tropical drinks, smoothies, appetizers, sandwiches and salads at the poolside bar or delivered to the guest's chaise lounge. Complimentary fresh Maui pineapple twice daily.
The Lobby Lounge - Constructed of black lava stone and lighted amber glass. Living-room-style seating and a verandah for sunset viewing year-round, and whale-watching in winter. Cocktails and a light menu of pupus from midday until late night, with live Hawaiian music each evening.
